چکیده

The Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding mountains have an average elevation of 4,400 m a glaciated area $$\sim $$ 100,000 $$\hbox {km}^{2}$$ giving it the name “Third Pole (TP) region”. TP is headwater many major rivers in Asia that provide fresh water to hundreds millions people. Climate change altering energy cycle at record pace but future this region highly uncertain due challenges simulating weather climate processes complex area. Convection-Permitting Third (CPTP) project Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) Flagship Pilot Study (FPS) aims revolutionize our understanding impacts on through ensemble-based, kilometer-scale modeling. Here we present experimental design first results from multi-model, multi-physics ensemble simulations three case studies. five participating modeling systems show high performance across range meteorological situations are close having ”observational quality” precipitation near-surface temperature. This partly large differences between observational datasets region, which leading source uncertainty model evaluations. However, systematic cold bias above 2000 exists most systems. Model physics sensitivity tests performed with Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) planetary boundary layer (PBL) microphysics contribute equally uncertainties. Additionally, larger domains result better performance. We conclude by describing high-priority research needs next steps CPTP project.

Climate sensitivity estimated from ensemble simulations of glacial climate

The concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere continues to rise, hence estimating the climate system’s sensitivity to changes in GHG concentration is of vital importance. Uncertainty in climate sensitivity is a main source of uncertainty in projections of future climate change. Here we present a new approach for constraining this key uncertainty by combining ensemble simulation...

High Energy Neutrino Astronomy: Towards Kilometer-Scale Detectors

Of all high-energy particles, only neutrinos can directly convey astronomical information from the edge of the universe—and from deep inside the most cataclysmic high-energy processes. Copiously produced in high-energy collisions, travelling at the velocity of light, and not deflected by magnetic fields, neutrinos meet the basic requirements for astronomy. Their unique advantage arises from a f...

The prevalence of kilometer-scale heterogeneity in the source region of MORB upper mantle

The source regions of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) are heterogeneous, consisting of chemically and lithologically distinct domains of variable size. Partial melting of such heterogeneous mantle sources gives rise to diverse isotopic compositions of MORB and abyssal peridotites. Variations in radiogenic isotope ratios in MORB are attributed to mixing of melts derived from enriched and depleted...

Ensemble forecast of Indo‐Pacific SST based on IPCC twentieth‐century climate simulations

[1] A set of Markov models is developed based on a statistical linearization of 5 coupled ocean‐atmosphere general circulation models used in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes Fourth Assessment Report (IPCC AR4), and is applied to ensemble prediction of the tropical Indo‐ Pacific sea surface temperature variations. By taking advantage of the long data records of IPCC simulations, t...

Ensemble yield simulations: crop and climate uncertainties, sensitivity to temperature and genotypic adaptation to climate change

Estimates of the response of crops to climate change rarely quantify the uncertainty inherent in the simulation of both climate and crops. We present a crop simulation ensemble for a location in India, perturbing the response of both crop and climate under both baseline (12 720 simulations) and doubled-CO2 (171 720 simulations) climates. Some simulations used parameter values representing genot...
